Chums in the Community

Safe Shores

Safe Shores is an exemplary children's advocacy center that provides intervention, hope and healing for children and families affected by abuse, trauma and violence in the District of Columbia, and prevents child abuse through education and training. After our initial visit to Safe Shores DC Chums knew immediately that we had to support this wonderful organization and began providing clothing and toys during the holiday season and participating in wrapping parties where we donate our gifts and wrap the numerous corporate sponsors' donations.

DC Public Schools

Our public schools have a special place in our hearts since so many of our members have been part of the system at some point in their lives as students, parents or educators.  Over the years we have partnered with several schools to provide food, clothing and cash to families in need.  We have helped out in the classroom by tutoring and sponsoring holiday events at the schools and strengthened families by presenting workshops on topics such as job preparation and financial management. Awarding Scholarships to graduating seniors has been an important part of our history. We've hosted a variety of fundraising activities including walk-a-thons, theater parties and jazz brunches to name a few. Mixing fundraising with fun has created a formula for success that we to try to exceed each year.

All Shades of Pink

A former member of our chapter founded All Shades of Pink (ASOP) in 2007.  ASOP has partnered with six area hospitals and donated over 2000 blankets to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.  In addition the ASOP Utility Assistance Fund provides assistance to families in keeping their utilities in service while undergoing treatment.  Our chapter has made many blankets and donated funds to support the work of this outstanding organization.

International Outreach

Our outreach efforts do not stop at the border. Throughout the year, the Washington DC Chums gather used prescription eyeglasses to donate to the Christian Eye Center in Tema, Ghana.  Each year, over 1000 pairs of glasses are carried over by a visiting eye surgeon who is the daughter of a Chum. Additionally, we reach out to friends and family to help us provide many toiletries to the Alpha and Omega Ministries in Liberia. We are proud to be a part of these efforts that serve those who are so appreciative.
